Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) is a severe form of dissociation and lack of continuity between thoughts, memories, surroundings, actions, and sense of identity. This disorder usually develops as a way to cope with trauma.
Three types of dissociative disorders:
- Dissociative identity disorder
- Dissociative amnesia
- Depersonalization/derealization disorder
Symptoms of dissociative identity disorder:
- The existence of two or more distinct identities that are accompanied by changes in behavior, memory, and
- Memory loss (amnesia) of certain time periods, personal information, and/or past traumatic events
- A blurred sense of identity
- A sense of being withdrawn from yourself and your emotions
- Significant distress or problems in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning
