Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) is a severe form of dissociation and lack of continuity between thoughts, memories, surroundings, actions, and sense of identity. This disorder usually develops as a way to cope with trauma.

Three types of dissociative disorders:

  • Dissociative identity disorder
  • Dissociative amnesia
  • Depersonalization/derealization disorder

Symptoms of dissociative identity disorder:

  • The existence of two or more distinct identities that are accompanied by changes in behavior and memory
  • Memory loss (amnesia) of certain periods, personal information, and/or past traumatic events
  • A blurred sense of identity
  • A sense of being withdrawn from oneself and their emotions
  • Significant distress or problems in social, occupational, or other areas of functioning
